Welcome! Register now for the Third Regional Pneumococcal Symposium which will be held in Istanbul, Turkey on the 13th and 14th of February, 2008. The symposium, a collaborative effort of the Sabin Vaccine Institute and GAVI’s PneumoADIP at Johns Hopkins, will bring together scientific experts, key decisions makers, and public health professionals from around the world who have dedicated their efforts to pneumococcal vaccine development and control of pneumococcal disease. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), every year, this preventable disease kills 1.6 million people, including more than 800,000 children under age five. Children under 24 months of age and children with disorders of the immune system are most at risk. Recently the organism has developed both intermediate and high level of resistance to the most commonly used antibiotics. Despite its enormous impact, awareness of this illness and its burden remains low. Our goal in Istanbul is to review progress toward safe, effective pneumococcal vaccines and address the question of how to make sure they get to the world’s poorest children. New data on the extent and burden of the pneumococcal disease in Turkey and neighboring countries will also be reported. This Symposium will tackle pressing scientific, social, and economic issues confronting pneumococcal prevention. We look forward to seeing you in Istanbul!
